Groundhog sees shadow signaling 9 more months of Wilder

A Richmond-area groundhog emerged from a burrow this morning and saw its shadow, which according to historic folklore means the city will experience nine more months of Wilder.

The annual custom with woodchuck Powhatan Pete was attended by nearly 400 local residents, who gathered around a hole and witnessed the 12-year-old rodent emerge to see a black shadow on the ground.  Onlookers let out a faint moan as they realized there would be nearly one more year of Wilder-partisan decisions, a lack of minor-league baseball because of Wilder and Wilder-based feuds at nearly every level of city government.

One local woman at the event put it best: “I’m just looking forward to when I can wear shorts, run outside, and go back to normal once it’s the Pantele time of year.”
